William Shakespeare, poet and playwright, was baptised in Holy Trinity on 26 April 1564 and was buried there on 25 April 1616. The church still possesses the original Elizabethan register giving details of his baptism and burial, though it is kept by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust for safekeeping. He is buried in the beautiful 15th-century chancel built by Thomas Balsall, Dean of the Collegiate Church, who was buried within it in 1491. Shakespeare's funerary monument is fixed on a wall alongside his burial place.
The village has a Rugby Club, Shottery RFC, which is now based at Stratford's Rugby ground, Pearcecroft, on the Loxley Road, south Stratford. The club was founded by the Reverend David Capron, Vicar of St Andrew's church in the 1984. The Club has an excellent reputation both on and off the field of play.
In 1759 then-owner Reverend Francis Gastrell, having become tired of visitors, attacked and destroyed a mulberry tree in the garden said to have been planted by Shakespeare. In retaliation, the townsfolk destroyed New Place's windows. Gastrell applied for local permission to extend the property, this was granted but upon completion of this work the annual tax on the property was increased substantially. Rather than pay the increased tax he demolished the house, choosing instead to live next door at Nash's House which he also owned.
After the recent closure of the Bedworth Kwik Save (known locally as the Hypermarket), the site has been regenerated into a new Aldi store. Also, the local Woolworths has been closed down because of the credit crunch, leaving some Bedworth residents unemployed.
The Home Office opened the College on the 500 acre (2 km²) site in 1968. [2] The first students whilst having most of the facilities seen today had no proper accommodation and were bunked in large Nissen huts (in the area that is now the cricket and football pitches), which originally housed the RAF personnel when it was an operational airbase. The Staff College at Dorking was closed in 1981 and all training was transferred to Moreton.
